About us

Melissa & Luke Bowman have 3 children – Harrison, Campbell and Jock. Luke has been a cattle grazier for over 10 years on the family property.

They began their enterprise, BREAK IT DOWN COMPOSTING, to initially improve their property’s soil biology and performance and have now established a successful composting business.

As a favourable alternative to chemical fertilizers Luke and Melissa believe compost is the way of the future for soil fertility.

Break It Down Composting imports compost turners, composting equipment, Tebbe Spreaders & Silage Trailers from Europe and Compost Tea Machines from the US. They are also keen to educate everyone in this field so have Seminars and a Workshop being offered in July 2009 in Barraba.

The Bowmans follow a composting process called the CMC method (controlled microbial composting). This method was developed by the Luebke family in Austria through on farm and laboratory research. They have now become famous composting gurus known worldwide.

The CMC method which is controlled and guided, produces a premium grade well humified compost that has been inoculated, aerated and monitored to ensure high standards of quality. Humus management is a soil management system the Luebke's use in conjunction with CMC Compost.

The Bowmans use a range of raw materials to get the carbon:nitrogen ratio to the optimum 30:1. The raw materials include wheat and barley straw, native grass hay, yard waste from local landfill, chicken and cow manure and soil. The materials are laid out in windrows 100 meter long with the lighter materials on the bottom and heavier materials on top. The compost turner then blends the materials and forms a triangular shaped windrow which then starts the composting process. The triangular shape is important as it draws heat off the top of the windrow while pulling air in through the bottom of the windrow. The process usually takes about 6 – 8 weeks to produce a humified compost.
